Our decision to make Harry Potter inspired scents
With the launch of Greenhouse Three—a Harry Potter inspired scent—we wanted to provide context around our decision to donate a portion of the proceeds, and our decision to create scents inspired by the Harry Potter world at all.
In June of 2020, Jackie and I were planning our first six candles before the official launch of Onset & Rime. We were bouncing ideas around, including a potential Harry Potter inspired scent that had made it all the way to testing. But when the series’ famous author doubled down on her transphobic views, we decided to hold off.
I’m sure many of you reading this feel as conflicted as we did then. The books were an enormous part of our childhoods. We grew up with Harry, Ron and Hermione. Is it fair to let that joy be tainted by hateful words spewed by the author years later? Can we even look past the hate?
For Jackie and I, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that this author continues to hold onto beliefs that we emphatically oppose. Views that are damaging to an entire community, including friends and family of ours.
We’ve decided to take ownership of the wizarding world we all grew up with, and support the trans community while we’re at it.
For Greenhouse Three and any future Harry Potter inspired scents, we will donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity supporting LGBTQ+ initiatives. Every 6 months or so, we’ll switch up the organization and will keep track by updating this blog post. We welcome suggestions on Canadian charities to include! Email us at email@example.com or comment below.
$5.00 CAD from every 10 oz. Harry Potter inspired candle* sold will be donated.
$3.00 CAD from every 4 oz. Harry Potter inspired candle* sold will be donated.
Our first charity is The Canadian Centre for Gender + Sexual Diversity (CCGSD). We chose CCGSD because they focus on youth support, education and research. We believe in the power of education and are excited to contribute.
*Harry Potter scents currently include Greenhouse Three, with more to come.
